Marla Goodman

The Theremin is an electronic instrument invented more than 100 years ago, that is played entirely by gesture control (without the musician touching it). Producing a continuous monophonic tone that has been compared to a violin, a human voice, a cello, a ghost or even a flying saucer, the Theremin is easy to learn, and (addictively) challenging to master!

First discovering the Theremin in 2009, Marla has studied the history and technique of this unique instrument with internationally acclaimed Theremin virtuosos Carolina Eyck and Lydia Kavina. Her passion for Theremin playing goes far beyond making “woo-woo” noises in the air, to include repertoire from classical, jazz, folk, pop, film score and experimental genres.

Using learning strategies and repertoire borrowed from voice, strings, and other traditional instruments, Marla can coach learners of all ages on basic Theremin operation and tuning, instrument selection, and a variety of aerial fingering techniques, while strengthening their ear training, sight reading and basic music theory knowledge. The Theremin is popular second instrument among professional musicians, many of whom report that learning the Theremin sharpens their ear and improves their overall musical performance.

Feel free to schedule a single immersion lesson or an ongoing series at Marla’s Southside Bozeman studio near the Story Mansion. She has two student Theremins available for rent if you would like to dip a toe into Theremin practice at home, but have not yet purchased an instrument.
